Sharing My (Our) Story

I am sharing this with select friends for now, but someday, maybe I'll share it with a bigger group. These friends are people who are partners in prayer, and some are friends I know are going through the same fertility issues, or who have been there before.

I debated whether I'll share the cost of doing IVF. In the end, I decided to include it so people who are considering it will know the financial requirement to undergo this process. Anyway, as far as Kato is concerned, the cost of services is posted on their website. It is not a big secret. IVF is emotionally, physically and financially taxing. It is definitely not for everyone. That's why it took us a long time to decide to go for it.

4th Visit - Follicle Monitoring

Some of the patients' faces are becoming more familiar. Some of them were also in the clinic during our previous visits. I really hope we all get answered prayers. Speaking of prayer, I have been praying for several of my eggs to develop and for my hormones to be just right. I have been praying for a successful one-time attempt. Pray with me, please.

Anyway, today's visit is about checking the number and size of follicles as well as checking that the hormone levels are compatible with the level of follicle development. I went into the examination room for ultrasound and was told I have two big eggs - just the right size for Oocyte Pick Up (or egg retrieval). Praise God!

Once the  follicle size has been established, I then go to the treatment room for blood extraction to check three hormones - Estradiol, Luteinizing Hormone and Progesterone. It's a 40-minute wait for the results. I waited nervously. It turned out there was no reason to be nervous. The results matched the follicle development, which means my eggs will be harvested in Tuesday! Thank you Lord for answered prayers!

After discussing the results, I was given instructions for the procedure on Tuesday. First, I was given a nasal spray. Yes, you read it right. A nasal spray, but not the type that you use to clear a clogged nose. This is called Suprecur Spray, and it helps prepare the eggs for harvest. So apparently, the egg is stuck on the wall of the follicle. In order to safely harvest the egg, the Suprecur Spray helps the egg detach from the wall so it floats inside the follicle. That makes it easier to harvest the egg without damaging it. I watched a short video instruction on the use of the nasal spray. It's not that different from a regular nasal spray, I just had to make sure I get the right dosage at the right time. I was to use the nasal spray at exactly 8:30pm tonight.

Aside from the nasal spray, I was also prescribed 200mg of Ibuprofen. I was supposed to take it starting 12:00noon Monday, then 6pm, then 12 midnight, again at those precise time periods. The Ibuprofen is supposed to delay the release of the eggs. Since my eggs are almost mature, there is a possibility of them getting released before my Tuesday morning appointment. Other than the Ibuprofen, I was also to refrain from strenuous activities, including bedroom action. Ahem.

For my hubby's part, he's supposed to release semen Sunday, to prep him for the Tuesday semen collection. Why is it so much easier for guys?!

Today's expense - Php7,168 at the clinic, plus Php24 for the 3 Ibuprofen tablets which I purchased from Mercury Drug.  The clinic fee covers the consultation (Php560), Ultrasound (Php560), Hormone Tests (Php4,368) and the Suprecur Spray (Php1,680). Yeah, IVF isn't cheap. We are grateful for God's provision.
